Deadlines
When is a VAT return due?

You must send a return even if you have no VAT to pay or reclaim.
VAT return
Usually every 3 months. Due online one calendar month and 7 days after the end of the accounting period.
VAT payment
The same deadline as the return. The payment must reach HMRC's account by then.
Digital records
You must use compatible software to keep your VAT records and file your VAT returns under Making Tax Digital for VAT.
Late returns
HMRC gives a penalty point for each return sent late. Reach the points threshold and the penalty is £200.
These rules are correct as at 6 October 2026, for the 2026/27 tax year.
Your accountant sends a reminder ahead of each date, so you have time to get us what we need.
Registering for VAT
When do you have to register for VAT?
You must register when your total taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, the VAT registration threshold in 2026/27, or when you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. You can also choose to register below the threshold.
We can check your figures and register you with HMRC. Once you go over the threshold, you have to register within 30 days of the end of that month. VAT registration is a service we provide; ask us to add it to your quote.
