HMRC charges an initial £100 penalty when a Self Assessment tax return is late, with more after 3 months, and interest on tax paid late. Once you are in Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, HMRC uses penalty points for late returns instead. Your accountant sends reminders well ahead of each date.
Making Tax Digital
Does Making Tax Digital change your tax return?
Yes, if you're a sole trader or landlord whose qualifying income was over £50,000 in 2024/25. From 6 April 2026 you keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates using compatible software.
It also applies from 6 April 2027 if that income was over £30,000 in 2025/26. Either way, you still submit a tax return for the year, due by 31 January.
What counts, and what support costs
Qualifying income is your self-employment and property income added together, before expenses.
Making Tax Digital compliance support is an add-on for sole traders and landlords at £35 a month + VAT (£42 including VAT). See what Making Tax Digital support costs.
We'll tell you which side of the line you're on.
Correct as at 6 October 2026 for the 2026/27 tax year.

Questions
What do people ask us about Self Assessment?
Do I need an accountant to do my tax return?
No, it isn't a legal requirement. Many people use one to save time, avoid mistakes and make sure they claim the expenses and reliefs they're entitled to.
Is my tax return included if you already do my accounts?
Yes, in these packages. One Self Assessment tax return is included for a sole trader, a company director and a landlord who owns alone. Two are included for joint landlords and for a partnership, and each further partner's return is quoted.
Can I switch to you part-way through the year?
Yes. We accept clients who switch part-way through their financial year, and we contact your previous accountant for the handover.
Can you register me for Self Assessment?
Yes. If you're a new sole trader or partnership, registering you with HMRC is included in the monthly price. We help other people register too, and there may be a charge.
What happens if my tax return is late?
HMRC charges an initial £100 penalty, with more after 3 months, and interest on any tax paid late. If you are in Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, HMRC uses penalty points instead. We send reminders well ahead of 31 January so there is time to get it filed.
I'm selling a rental property. Is there anything to file?
Yes, if you make a taxable gain on a UK residential property. You must report it and pay the Capital Gains Tax within 60 days of completion. We prepare and file the return for landlords as a service we provide; ask us to add it to your quote.
Do I need to be on the Wirral?
No. We're based in Bromborough and work with clients across the UK by phone, Zoom, WhatsApp and our client app.
