A dedicated accountant
One named person who explains how to pay yourself and what to put aside for tax.
Choosing a structure
Should you start as a sole trader or a limited company?
GOV.UK says most people set up as a sole trader when first starting out. It is the simplest structure to set up and keep records for. A limited company is legally separate from its owners and has more to file each year.
You can move from one structure to another later. GOV.UK says it's usually easier to move from being a sole trader to a limited company. Our guide, sole trader or limited company, sets out the 2026/27 differences.
Which costs less depends on your own figures, and it can change from year to year. We run the numbers for both so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Deadlines
When do you have to register a new business?
A sole trader must register for Self Assessment if they earn more than £1,000 from self-employment in a tax year. A limited company must be registered with Companies House before it starts trading.
A sole trader must tell HMRC by 5 October after the end of the tax year. If you started in 2026/27, that is 5 October 2027.
For a partnership, the nominated partner registers the partnership and the other partners register separately, by 5 October in the business's second tax year. We do these registrations for you.
